“Mom I’m fine”, the perfect Belgian digital nomad

What exactly is the phenomenon Mom Im Fine?! A crazy Instagram account, gathering an amazing vision of the world and an unconditional son/mother’s love. Moreover, it is also the success story of a Belgian digital nomad and his willing to change the world.

A Plane Ticket And A Loving Mom

When Jonathan Kubben Quiñonez left our small country two years ago, he was determined: he quit his job, sold his car and took a one-way ticket to South America. Everything was simple, everything was clear. In fact, people nowadays are even conscious of that fact: traveling has never been so easy. Except maybe when you have a truly south-made protective mom, like Jonathan.

His mom was anxious thinking about her precious son traveling the world without any safety net, and the young Belgian started thinking about ways to make her feel better. Keeping her updated? Sending messages? With no time to wait for mail delay, digital media seemed to be the easiest option … But even with the incredible evolution of technology, using a good Internet connexion is not always possible while traveling. Jonathan actually explained that taking and posting a picture was therefore a practical choice: it was fast and efficient, enhance perfectly what he needed.

And just like that, “Mom I’m Fine” was born.

A strong will to move mountains

The curious thing is that what was at first a basic way of helping a mom-in-distress quickly became a viral Instagram account. With 335 million followers, Jonathan is now one of the most influent voices of his kind. The impulsive traveler has become a digital nomad, running at first a social media account and a striving community and then transforming them into an empire ruled with passion.

“I believe that social media can be used to do good. “MOM I’M FINE” isn’t about me nor travel. It goes beyond a message of love and it’s something we all need to remember: “Do what you love with passion.”

I’ve always found inspiration in people’s actions. Therefore my dream is to inspire others to live a meaningful life and care for each other. This is why I want to encourage people to do what they love.”

The young man has even won the philanthropy/green award at the “Influencer Awards” in Monaco, for all the action he has taken since the success of his account. He, for example, helped rebuild a school in Saint-Martin after hurricane Irma destroyed everything, and often calls for his audience to act and help as well! Jonathan also announced his next project at the Influencer Awards ceremony:

(…) The first country I was traveling to was Cuba, with difficult Internet access and very expensive mobile phone calls. I then came up with the idea of posting a photo with a message “Mom, I’m fine” wherever I was. Funnily enough it became a hit. This project has now transformed into a philanthropic foundation. We will soon be building a school in Mexico completely made of plastic waste.”
